Harris enjoys Trump’s ‘idea’ for health care plan

During the presidential debate this week, ABC News’ Linsey Davis reminded Donald Trump that he “has long vowed to repeal and replace” the Affordable Care Act. Then he asked, “So tonight, nine years after you started running, do you have a plan, and can you tell us what it is?”

The Republican candidate’s response wavered for a moment — he claimed to have “saved” the ACA during his first term, which was a blatant lie — before assuring voters that he and his team were “working in things.”

When asked in a follow-up question whether he has a plan to restore Obamacare or not, the former president replied, “I have an idea for a plan.” He added that Americans should expect to hear more about this “in the not too distant future.”

This did not go unnoticed by his Democratic opponent. As the Washington Post reported:

At a campaign event in Charlotte, Kamala Harris began mocking Donald Trump’s comments during Tuesday’s presidential debate about what he would do about the Affordable Care Act. People in the crowd started shouting ‘Maiktulo!’ – rejecting Trump’s response that he has ‘thoughts’ about the health care plan.

The vice president didn’t just highlight his GOP opponent’s speech, he mocked Trump and turned him into an opponent. A few hours later, Harris held a second event in North Carolina and did it again.

Around the same time, the Harris campaign issued a press release shedding light on the Republican plan to dismantle the existing health care system — a fact that has been well documented.

A day earlier, as NBC News noted, Trump’s press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, told CNN that the candidate will share his plan for health care “in the not too distant future.” When asked why, this campaign has not yet had a specific date.

I understand why Team Trump feels the need to play this tiresome game, but Republicans and their political establishment have been making ridiculous promises to follow these rules for years, the idea of that he will soon reveal the true purpose of laughter.

Indeed, let’s take a short trip down memory lane and note the familiarity of the situation.

In mid-July 2020, for example, as part of his re-election campaign, Trump appeared on Fox News and said, “We’re signing a health care plan in two weeks, a comprehensive health care plan of health.”

As regular readers may recall, two weeks passed, and a “full and complete” health care plan was not available. As July 2020 drew to a close, the then president was pressed to give some explanation. He told reporters, “We’re going to be making a very good health care plan. I’m going to sign it soon. It could be Sunday [Aug. 2]but it will soon happen.”

On Aug. 3 2020, Trump presented a new timeline: “I want to say that we will be introducing a great health care plan in the past – hopefully, before the end of the month. It will be completed now .”

August 2020, of course, came and went without the emergence of a hard plan. In mid-September 2020, the then president rejected the idea that he was failing to fulfill his promise. I have it all fixed. I fixed it all,” Trump told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos, adding, “I fixed it all.”

It was exactly four years ago this week. He had not prepared it all.

A month later, the Republican told CBS News’ Lesley Stahl that his health care plan would be “announced soon.” After Trump abruptly ended the interview, then-White House press secretary Kayleigh McEnany gave the “60 Minutes” anchor a tirade she said included the White House’s health care plan. It did not.

Four years later, Trump is not only talking about the “ideas” of his non-existent plan, but his campaign team is maintaining the fantasy that the plan will be released to the public soon.

My advice: Don’t hold your breath waiting for a plan that won’t show up.
